뒤늦게 이름을 접한 사람들이 어느 날 사라졌다. 볼 때마다 내 키가 더 컸다고 말하는 어른도 사라졌다. 2014년 처음으로 숨이 유지하는 온도에 대해 생각했다. 한동안 모든 것이 멈춰버렸다고, 무력하게 형질을 보면서 거리감을 느꼈다.
세월호 참사와 할아버지의 죽음을 경험한 그해 나는 성인이 되었다. 2년 뒤 안산시청에서 참사 관련 사진과 영상을 정리했다. 누군가 갑자기 나를 때린 것처럼 숨을 고르는 시간이 길어졌다.
온점에 가까운 질문으로 평생을 다 살 것만 같았는데 가만히 서서 바라보니 움직임이 느껴지는 순간이 있었다. 평범한 장면 안에 가득 찬 움직임을 목격할 때마다 조금씩 벗어나고 싶었다. 다친 곳을 발견하고 살이 차오르기까지 회복은 한순간에 이뤄지지 않았으므로 오래도록 응시해야 했다. 천천히, 생물로 다가오는 순간에 귀 기울이며 나아갔다.
People who I hadn't known disappeared one day. A man who always told me that I’ve grown also disappeared. For the first time in 2014, I thought about the temperature of my breath. Helplessly feeling a sense of distance, I looked at the scenery and felt everything has stopped.
The year when Sewol ferry disaster occurred, my grandfather passed away after a long illness. The same year, I turned 19. Two years later In 2016, I arranged pictures and videos related to the Sewol ferry disaster at Ansan city hall. I felt breathless. It took longer to catch my breath as if someone punched me in the gut.
I thought my whole life would be full of questions closer to periods—but standing still, gazing into it, there was a moment I felt movement. Whenever I witnessed mundane scenes packed with movements, I slowly wanted to escape. I had to stare for a long time because no quick recovery could be made after discovering wounds. I moved forward to the moment that slowly emerged as a creature.
